Deep freeze

Apologies for the quality of these photos of asparagus fern and the allotment, these were taken with my phone as the light was fading.

The whole country has been in the grip of a cold spell for a  couple of weeks now.  In Warwick we've managed to escape any substantial snowfall, but over the last couple of days we've experienced the most amazing hoar frost.  Any foliage has attracted incredibly dense formations of ice crystals.

Seen through the freezing fog the landscape has a ghostly black and white quality of unusual beauty.  When the sun does break through the effect is magical.  The photo below was taken with the usual camera.

  1. Wonderful pics Si .. I was instantly reminded of my first visit to Warwick way back in 1991 (the first winter at the cottage .. I had a young friend from LWT staying with me and we were so cold at night we took off to Boots in Warwick to buy electric blankets. The visions of the trees on the way there covered with hoar frost are still so vivid in my head .. very atmospheric.
