This is such a great time at the allotment with no need to buy any vegetables. Even our onions which have been poor this year are now providing us with all we need.
We have even had a couple of small tomatoes, but the promised crop is massive. So far the weather has not been conducive to blight so fingers crossed for a great crop. These in the picture are an unknown variety with seed taken from a tomato a friend gave us. Searching on the web, the nearest looking variety I can find is Pomodoro Costuluto Genovese seeds supplied by Thompson & Morgan.
These artichokes are exceptionally beautiful but beware the needles on t
he tips of every leaf. They are extremely sharp and as strong as steel. As a result we keep clear of this particular plant and admire the flowers without
attempting to cut and cook them.
From time to time we come across frogs and toads, which we encourage as at worst harmless and hopefully they will take the odd slug out. This one was discovered living inside the hollow stem of an old swiss chard plant.
